Bins provide a great solution to keeping all waste materials in one place and the surroundings clean and tidy. Dumpsters can be used for a myriad of things, with both homeowners and businesses taking advantage of the huge amount of waste they can fit into the bin. They make it easier to clean up, and create a safe environment for everyone crossing through during the job.

But how do you select the right bin rental size?

In most cases, it is recommended that you pick a bin that is one size bigger than what you think you need. Waste products like drywall, scrap wood, and carpeting occupy a huge volume, while dirt, concrete, and rock have a bigger weight than volume, and you are only required to fill the bin quarter full – though you should verify this with your bin rental company.

Finally, dumpsters of the same volume may have different dimensions. So it is important to ask about the height of the bin. For weighty materials, it is best to rent a low container so you can easily throw them over the side.

Common bin measurements

Dumpster sizes are usually expressed in yards, with each size being varied to accommodate the needs of the users.

Smallest bins

Some bins can be as small as 4 cubic yards, though many companies offer the smallest size as 10 yards. The 4 yards bin can be used for small home cleanout jobs to carry landscaping/construction debris, gravel, topsoil, concrete, and heavy bricks.

The 10 yard bin is much larger than the 4 yard one, and measures 12 feet in length, 8 feet in width, and 4 feet high. It is suitable for small home cleanout tasks, roof shingles, and household debris. This size of bin can be rented when cleaning out your attic, shed, or garage, or when remodelling a bathroom or kitchen.

Medium size bins

Most projects require a 20-yard bin that can handle trash weighing around 9 tonnes. Measuring 22 feet in length, 8 feet in width, and 4.5 feet high, this size is ideal for roof, bathroom, and other home demolition/renovation projects. It is also popular with furniture removal projects, full-home cleanouts, and furniture removal, since it carries about the same loads of 8 to 10 pickup trucks.

For medium home cleanout jobs, flood or fire restoration, and furniture disposal, a 14-yard bin may be more appropriate. It can carry about 6 pickup trucks worth of trash.

Large size bins

The largest bins are 40 yards, and are ideal for major renovation or construction work. It is usually 8 feet high, so you may require steps to heave heavy things over. For something not so big, you may rent a 30-yard container. It easily fits in front of most houses, and can be used to carry all kinds of trash without any trouble.

Depending on the nature of your trash and other factors, you may need to rent multiple bins. To ensure that you get the right size, it is important that you be detailed when discussing your options with a rental company representative. For some bins, you may need a permit, so also keep that in mind.
